Address
Paseo De la Flores, Playa San Cristobel N12, E-18690 Almunecar, Granada
I’d recommend reading “As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning” by Laurie Lee before visiting Almuñecar. It’s one of the books that made me fall in love with Spain, and it makes sense of the seafront monument to an Englishman, who visited at the onset of the Spanish Civil War. The Hotel Helios Costa Tropical is a home from home for many of our guests, who have appreciated their strong focus on quality of service over the years. I suggest visiting the little square in the old town for a tapas lunch during your stay.

Optional excursions
Alpujarras
1 / 4
Situated against the southern slopes of Spain’s Sierra Nevada, the isolated La Alpujarra region gives you an authentic taste of Andalucian scenery. This is where you’ll witness whitewashed villages clinging to clifftops as you follow winding mountain roads and discover the delights of traditional bakeries selling homemade cakes and pastries. Moorish, in every sense. Alongside the magnificent valley views across the almond groves and sun-scorched vineyards, this area is also renowned for its Arabic history. After today’s excursion you’ll know all about the conflict between the Moors and the Christians, as well as being able to buy a few slices of delicious torta de almendras to tuck into once you’re back at the hotel.
Málaga
1 / 4
We’ll enjoy the majority of the day in Andalucia’s second largest city as we make the most of Malaga’s Moorish architecture and legendary seafood dishes. Cultural highlights include the ancient Alcazaba fortress and Roman amphitheatre as well as the Cathedral of the Incarnation and the historic fountain within the Plaza del Obispo. There are also lots of tucked away tapas bars to tempt you into a laid-back afternoon of grazing and no trip is complete without searching the Central Market Atarazanas for marinated anchovies on toast. If you’re looking for a spot of retail therapy, Calle Marqués de Larios is renowned for boutiques and designer stores as well as some of Spain’s most expensive residences.
Tropical Valley
1 / 4
Discover one of Andalucia’s best kept secrets as we travel to the whitewashed village of Frigiliana. This is one of the most beautiful traditional towns in Malaga province with cobbled streets and wooden doorways bursting with bougainvillea and pastel shaded pots. From here we’ll head to the Tropical Valley where citrus groves and fertile farmland provide a real taste of the good life in southern Spain.
Nerja Caves and Frigiliana
1 / 4
Today we’ll visit two of Malaga province’s most impressive attractions, the Nerja caves and the traditional village of Frigiliana. Starting with the prehistoric caves, we’ll journey underground and enjoy a guided tour of the expansive subterranean system. It’s an immersive experience with spotlights on stalactites and stalagmites as well as silent chambers adorned in ancient artwork. Next, we’ll visit one of the prettiest villages in Andalucia, Frigiliana. Here you’ll find whitewashed walls bathed in bougainvillea a Moorish old quarter with narrow streets paved in mosaics. After taking in the panoramic sea views from the castle ruins, we’ll spend time browsing the bodegas (shops) and enjoying a glass or two of Frigiliana’s famous sweet dessert Moscatel wine.
