Included excursions
O Grove walking route (walking: 10 miles)
1 / 5
We start with a short drive to Mirador da Siradella for coastal views before heading to Praia da Lanzada. The walk follows a 10-mile loop around the O Grove Peninsula, with wooden walkways, small coves and open headlands. The route finishes in Meloxo, a fishing port where the daily catch still comes ashore. A packed lunch will be provided for this full day walk.
Camino Portugués (walking: 4 miles)
1 / 5
A short transfer takes us inland to join the Camino Portugués. We walk 4 miles alongside the Río Gafos, following shaded woodland paths into Pontevedra. This historic town is known for its traffic-free old centre, lively squares and relaxed cafés, making it ideal for some free time to buy some lunch. A gentle and accessible walk, returning to A Toxa by late afternoon.
Ruta da Pedra e da Auga (walking: 9 miles)
1 / 5
Today’s 9-mile walk follows the Ruta da Pedra e da Auga, a riverside trail linking Armenteira to Cambados. The route passes restored watermills, woodland paths and the Umia River, finishing in the Albariño wine region’s main town. With a mix of nature and history, this is one of Galicia’s most rewarding walking routes. A packed lunch will be provided for this full day walk.
Boat trip and walk (walking: 4 miles)
1 / 5
A relaxed half day begins with a walk around A Toxa Island and over to O Grove port. From here, a one-hour boat trip explores the Ría de Arousa, passing mussel platforms, with a tasting of fresh mussels and Albariño wine on board. A final 1.2-mile walk brings you back to the hotel.
Camino Francés (walking: 10 miles)
1 / 5
Our final walk of the week follows the last 10 miles of the Camino Francés, from O Amenal to Santiago de Compostela. The route passes eucalyptus forests and Monte do Gozo, where the cathedral first comes into view. The walk ends in Praza do Obradoiro, the main square in front of the cathedral, with free time to explore before returning to A Toxa. A packed lunch will be provided for this full day walk.
Location
The hotel is located on one of the scenic ‘Rias Baixas’ of Pontevedra in the green landscapes of Galicia. The island of A Toxa features walking trails, thermal springs, a golf course, a small shopping centre less than half-a-mile from the hotel, and the unique Chapel of St Caralampio, which is covered in scallop shells. The fishing port of O Grove, known for its large indoor market hall and seafood restaurants, is less than a mile away and can be reached on foot via a level bridge that links Toxa to the mainland. The nearest bus stop from the hotel is approximately 500 yards away. The drive to/from the airport takes approximately two-and-a-quarter hours.
Out and about
The city of Pontevedra is approximately 30 miles away and is known for its Gothic St Maria la Mayor Basilica. While the capital of northwest Spain’s Galicia region, Santiago de Compostela, is home to the 11th-century Cathedral of St James and is approximately 50 miles away. Perhaps explore the wider Rías Baixas region, including nearby towns like Sanxenxo, approximately nine miles away.
Santiago de Compostela
The city is known as the final stop on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. Its historic cathedral houses the shrine of the Apostle James and its UNESCO-listed Old Town features arcaded streets and impressive stone architecture.
Sanxenxo
Blessed with beautiful sandy beaches, Sanxenxo is a hotspot for travellers. It has a lively marina, traditional Galician architecture and a bustling town square.
