Fairmont Empress
Hand-Picked Hotel
Historic elegance at this classic, harbourfront landmark
This elegant hotel in the capital of British Columbia mixes luxury and history perfectly – just like Victoria itself. With 464 rooms, it sits right on the harbour front, an instantly recognisable landmark in this architecturally impressive town.
Known as the ‘Castle on the Coast’, the hotel has maintained its reputation for personalised service over 150 years of trading. It even has its own canine ambassador – Winston – who’s there to welcome guests and provide snuggles for those who are missing their pets back home.
This is a region that prides itself on its fresh, farm-to-table cooking – and that’s reflected in the restaurant menus at the Empress. You’ll find locally raised meat and locally caught seafood in the main restaurant, Q – or you could opt for a slap-up English afternoon tea in the Lobby Lounge. For sundowners and winter warmers, head to Veranda, overlooking the harbour.
There’s also the spa – recognised by Conde Nast as one of the top 100 in the Americas, it’s a lovely, calming space offering seasonal treatments and a pool.

Local Area
Victoria is the capital of British Columbia. It’s a place where British visitors feel instantly at home, with pubs, double decker buses, and fish and chip shops – plus some impressive colonial architecture, including the Fairmont Empress itself.
Sitting right on the harbourfront means you’ll be in one of the best locations in the city to soak up the laid-back atmosphere, with people walking the harbour causeway and boats moving around the water.
Take a wander around the city and you’ll find plenty of green space, including the much-loved Butchart Gardens. You’ll also love the carefully restored, Victorian-era Craigdarroch Castle. The city also has the second-oldest Chinatown in North America (after San Francisco), just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.
Victoria also makes the perfect base for exploring the rest of Vancouver Island. Cycling is popular as it’s relatively flat, there are deserted sandy beaches and great surfing and kayaking.
