Best places to go on holiday in June

It’s the start of the summer season – but where’s best to holiday in June? Warmer weather in the northern hemisphere means it’s a great time to explore, whether you’re dreaming of ancient Incan ruins in the Andes or the glistening Mediterranean. We have some great options...

Greece

With history dating back for millennia, stretches of sun-bathed coastline, white-washed villages and olive groves, emerald green forests and enticing islands, Greece is sublime. From relaxing beach stays to island hopping, June is the ideal time to go too – fewer crowds at the ancient sites, balmy but comfortable weather, and the usual delicious food. Discover the largest of the Greek islands with a stay on Crete, island-hop between Rhodes, Symi and Leros, or cruise the Aegean with stops in Athens and Thessaloniki.

Beautiful Ksamil beach in Albania

Albania

June is the perfect month to discover a less-explored corner of Europe, heading off the beaten tourist track in Albania. With weather that’s as lovely as its neighbours in the Balkans and Greece, it’s ideal for sightseeing in the capital Tirana, walking in the country’s spectacular national parks, and discovering World Heritage Sites and historic landmarks in some unforgettably dramatic settings. The sun will be shining on the beaches of the Albanian Riviera too, but without the crowds of other European destinations.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

Croatia’s glorious coast is always tempting, with long stretches of beach, unspoiled islands dotted in the deep blue waters of the Adriatic and centuries of history to uncover along the way. One of the loveliest parts is the Makarska Riviera on the Dalmatian coast: combine a stay in Split, created from a Roman emperor’s palace, with a cruise to picturesque villages on the nearby islands – June’s weather is made for swimming, sunbathing, sightseeing and sipping local wine in the sun.

The scenery at the Nymphenburg palace in Munich Germany

Bavaria, Germany

When you see the setting of the beautiful Nymphenburg Palace, you can see why Bavaria’s rulers chose to spend their summers here. As the warmer weather arrives, the mountain foothills of this corner of southern Germany are pleasantly sunny, just right for getting outdoors or marvelling at the gilded rococo decoration of Bavaria’s palaces. It’s not too hot to discover the highlights of Munich or relax with a stein of beer in a beer garden either.

Cyprus

The third largest island in the Mediterranean, June is hard to beat if you’re looking to discover the best of Cyprus – the winter snow on its mountains has long since melted, and the soaring temperatures and crowds of peak summer haven’t arrived. Discover Europe’s last divided capital in Nicosia, find wonderful views and vineyards in the Troodos Mountains, travel back in time at the UNESCO-listed Tombs of the Kings near Paphos and relax in the sun this month.

Sicily, Italy

Known for its history, its scenery and its mouth-wateringly delicious food, there’s an added reason to visit Sicily in June. Not only because the temperatures are perfect for exploring this month, but with the Radicepura Garden Festival taking place too, Sicily’s answer to the Chelsea Flower Show. Then wander through the winding lanes of Taormina, soak in the views of the gleaming limestone palaces of Syracuse, or sit back with a glass of Etna wine by the sea.

Slovenia

Slovenia may be one of the smallest countries in Europe but it’s packed with reasons to visit, including the fairytale Lake Bled, its 15th century church isolated on the island at the heart of the picturesque waters. Nearby capital Ljubljana is a feast for the eyes, with its attractive collection of Renaissance, baroque and art nouveau buildings, the castle looming over the pedestrianised old town, and boat cruises along the river. Bathed in June sunshine, it’s a particular treat.

Rock of Calpe, Spain

Costa Blanca, Spain

June is easily one of the best months to explore the Spanish Costas, with the sun shining all along the coast. But it’s a particularly good time to visit the Costa Blanca, making the most of the pleasantly warm weather to discover the sights of Valencia, from the historic buildings of the old town to contemporary art, architecture and museums in the modern city. Or escape the urban streets to bird-watch around the lagoons of Albufera Natural Park.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Peru

One of the biggest highlights of any South American adventure is Peru, from its magnificent landscapes to the incredible Incan ruins. And June’s weather makes it one of the best months to enjoy everything the country has to offer, from the heights of Lake Titicaca and the Andes, to Machu Picchu in the sunshine, and a great chance of spotting condors in the Colca Canyon, plus the spectacular Inti Raymi festival of the sun.

Namibia

Starkly beautiful deserts, deep-red sand dunes, lively safari plains and eerie coastlines lend a mysterious, almost fairytale-like aspect to Namibia. And June is one of the best times to discover this remarkable country. Nights tend to be cool but days are enjoyably sunny for cruising along the coast or venturing into the desert, while the drier weather means there’s a great chance to seeing the animals in national parks such as Etosha, as they gather around water holes.

California, USA

Explore the magic of California, where winding roads cut through towering redwood forests and alongside sun-dappled shores, from one vibrant city pulsing with life to another equally as exciting. June in California sees hardly a drop of rain too, so it’s an ideal time to explore the state. You could spend a week exploring Yosemite and other national parks alone but, for an all-American road trip, add San Francisco, Napa Valley, and Los Angeles to your list too.

Mauritius

Snow-white beaches shaded by palm trees, impossibly clear turquoise waters lapping at the shore: Mauritius is the stuff of dreams. And temperatures are much more bearable on this southern Indian Ocean isle during June, with pleasantly sunny highs of around 24C, less humidity and far fewer people than the peak months. Discover Creole heritage, colourful villages, nature reserves and tea plantations, as well as plenty of chance to embrace the laid-back lifestyle – just pack some layers for the evenings.

Hamilton Harbour at sunset, Bermuda

Bermuda

The Caribbean is normally off-limits during June as the rainy season rolls in across the islands. But head north to Bermuda and you can still expect warm, dry days and a chance to enjoy the sun before the worst of the humidity hits later in the summer. Enjoy the private beaches of the west coast or a subterranean spa treatment, find pink sand coves with coral reefs, discover naval history and colonial buildings and find shopping galore.

Pura Taman Ayun Temple, Bali

Indonesia

It can be tricky to decide when to visit Indonesia, with different climates more than 3,000km of islands making up the country. But apart from the far eastern corner, June is one of the best months to see Indonesia, whether you’re hoping to relax on the beach, spot wildlife, explore temples, go walking or soak up the culture at the Bali Arts Festival. Mix Bali and Lombok, spot Komodo dragons or cruise in style aboard a wooden sailing boat.
