Best holiday destinations in November
Winter has arrived, and the dark, colder nights are drawing in. Instead of thinking about all the festive planning for the next month, why not seek out tropical adventures and unique festivals? When it comes to November holidays, there are plenty of exciting options.
Spain
Travel to southern Spain in November and you can look forward to warm days and uncrowded beaches. Alicante and Andalucia have some of the best temperatures in Europe and most of the restaurants along the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca are open for business. City sightseeing is also more enjoyable, and less touristy, with Madrid, Seville, and Valencia perfect for day trips.
Cyprus
Cyprus in November sees plenty of sunshine and daytime temperatures are usually in the early twenties. This makes places like Paphos perfect for holidaymakers looking to explore as well as lie by the pool. Cyclists and hikers will be in their element as they seek out the trails along the dramatic Mediterranean coastline of the Akamas Peninsula, and the forest-covered foothills surrounding Mount Olympus.
Madeira
Make the most of Madeira in November by visiting the capital, Funchal, and taking a stroll around the pedestrianised old town and the São Tiago Fortress. It’s also a great time of year for following the Madeira Levadas (irrigation channels) as they wind their way through chestnut and pine forests. Alternatively, why not visit a vineyard for wine tasting or take a walk under the autumnal foliage?
Italy
Head to Italy in November and you’ll find hot roasted chestnuts, spit-roasted chickens, and pigs slowly turning in open-air markets. Big scarves are wrapped around fashionistas and umbrellas are always close at hand. It’s a great time for visiting big cities, such as Rome and Milan, as well as driving an all but empty Amalfi Coast and strolling around the narrow streets of Sorrento in search of cosy cafés.
Iceland
If you’ve always wanted to see the Northern Lights, head to Iceland in November. This is when the nights draw in early and rows of brightly coloured lights adorn market stalls selling glühwein (mulled wine) and reindeer sausages. Iceland’s landscapes are also at their most dramatic this time of year – think snow-capped volcanoes, thermal hot springs, and tumbling waterfalls.
Cambodia
Stepping through the intricately carved entrance of one of Angkor’s crumbling, creeper-clad temples. Watching a pink-hued sunset over the mighty Mekong River. Strolling through the Parisian-style streets of Phnom Penh’s French Quarter. Cambodia delights and surprises. November is one of the best months to visit, as it’s dry, with less crowds. The perfect time to enjoy the country’s serene temples and cities.
Mexico
Ancient civilisations come alive among fascinating Aztec and Mayan ruins. You’ll find them dotted all over the country, whether hidden deep in the jungle, perched on the Caribbean coast, or basking in the sun on the high plains around Mexico City. In November, too, the famous Day of the Dead festival brings the streets alive with colour and noise. Not to be missed.
