Local Area

Hunter Valley in New South Wales is synonymous with grape growing and wine estate tours. It’s one of southeast Australia’s worst kept secrets with working farms and luxury lodges offering all manner of inland accommodation.

Getting there is relatively straightforward. Places like Pokolbin, in the lower valley region, can be reached in around three hours from Sydney by car. Whereas it’s just seven stops on the wine train route running from Sydney Central to Singleton station.

Once you arrive, you’ll find numerous bus tours and private transport ferrying folk from one wine estate and well-stocked farm shop to the next. Wine tasting sessions are top of the list of things to do alongside trips to artisan cheese makers and gourmet delicatessens.

However, delve a little deeper and you’ll be spoiled for choice for alternative activities. Hot air ballooning, horse riding, cooking classes, e-bike tours, spa days and golf courses are all accessible in the Hunter Valley. And if you’re looking for something, a bit more Australian, why not try barrel rolling or grape pounding to really fit in with the locals.
