Local Area

The state of Tasmania is situated around 240kms southeast of Australia. It’s an easy island to get to from the mainland with flights leaving from Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.

Hobart, the capital, is located in the southeast of Tasmania. It’s becoming a real hot spot for those in the know with a rejuvenated waterfront district blending with characterful seafaring heritage - the new wharf at the end of Hunter Street, the perfect example.

Although island life is much less hectic than what you’ll find across the Bass Strait, don’t get into thinking there’s not much to do. Practically half of Tasmania has national park status with the foothills of Kunanyi (Mt Wellington), close to the city and ripe for hiking.

Tasmania’s also a real favourite for foodies and art lovers. Hobart boasts an array of fine dining restaurants and fresh produce markets. Elsewhere you’ll find open-air stalls at Salamanca Place as well as art exhibitions at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

The Hunter Street precinct is also home to alfresco café culture overlooking the water as well as an assortment of art galleries, bars and restaurants. Follow the signs to walking trails that will take you past the marinas and piers and around the historic lanes and colonial-era cottages over at Battery Point.
