Local Area
Cairns is situated on Australia’s tropical northeast coast in Far North Queensland. Although the city itself is bereft of a beach – closest is about a 30min drive – folk still flock here for what lies beneath the ocean. This is basically one of the best bases for taking a boat tour and experiencing the Great Barrier Reef – which lies around 30mins offshore.
Another aspect of the tropical climate has been to produce and preserve the oldest rainforest on the planet. There’s a heritage train that runs from the centre of the city to
the mountain town of Kuranda. From there you can take the 7.5km Skyrail gondola over Barron Gorge National Park where you’ll be able to see the rainforest canopy from above.
If you’re staying in central Cairns, the Esplanade Waterfront is the place to be. This is where you’ll find a protected saltwater lagoon and several grassy BBQ parks spread along the 2.5km pedestrianised promenade. It’s also just a 15min walk to the city centre where you’ll find the aquarium, art gallery and history museum all make for good days out.
