Shangri La The Marina Cairns
Hand-Picked Hotel
A central Cairns location and the five-star extravagance you’d expect from the Shangri La brand.
The Shangri La The Marina Cairns has a prime location on Marina Marlin, just a stone’s throw from the Cairns Esplanade. Its setting makes it a brilliant springboard for the region’s main attractions, including the Great Barrier Reef, the Trinity Inlet, and the Coral Sea. Despite its central postcode, the hotel has a world-away feel, thanks to tropical gardens that blanket its exteriors.
When you’re not out exploring, the resort is well geared up for taking it easy. The gardens make way for a large pool and a couple of smaller whirlpools, which are positioned in sleek wooden decking, and surrounded by palms and loungers.
At mealtimes, The Backyard by Shangri La specialises in ‘casual waterside dining’. Expect a laid-back atmosphere, attentive service and expertly presented local dishes. We’d highly recommend the Seafood Platter – a two-tier tower of fresh-from-the-net goodies. There’s also a couple of bars with impressive wine and cocktail lists.

Local Area
Cairns lies on the north-east coast of Far North Queensland, and it’s a brilliant base for exploring the region’s treasures. This is your gateway to the world-famous Great Barrier Reef, with its technicolour corals and marine life, and the lush rainforests of the Wet Tropics Heritage Area, including The Daintree – the oldest living rainforest.
As for Cairns city itself, it’s a place best enjoyed outdoors. There’s walking, skating, and cycling along its tree-lined esplanade, picnicking in its leafy parks, and open-air boat tours along the Marina Marlin.
In terms of in-town attractions, try the Cairns Botanic Gardens – a haven of lily pad ponds, palm trees and tropical shrubs – and Cairns Aquarium, a miniature version of the Great Barrier Reef (ideal if snorkelling and diving doesn’t appeal). Tourist big-hitters aside, the city buzzes with restaurants, bars and boutiques, so you’ll never be short of things to see and do.
