Local Area
Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory and sits at the Top End overlooking the Timor Sea. It’s a multi-cultural city with numerous open air food markets and outdoor festivals adding to the summer holiday scene. However, as Australia’s wettest state capital, locals are treated to a humid tropical climate with a regular monsoon season.
Head down to the waterfront and you’ll find seaside parks and saltwater lagoons sitting alongside alfresco cafes and seafood restaurants. It’s an ideal place to stay in the city with the main attractions of the revitalised Central Business District just a few blocks away.
If you’ve got plans to use Darwin as a base to explore within the Northern Territory, you won’t be alone. Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk national parks are all to the southeast of the city. Organised tours here conjure up some of Australia’s most impressive sandstone gorges and cascading waterfalls. The walking trails and canoe safaris are unbelievable.
