Local Area
Sitting alongside the Potomac River, adjacent to the states of Maryland and Virginia, Washington DC can be found just a few miles inland from America’s mid-east coast. This is the capital city of the USA and packed full of magnificent monuments and museums. It’s also the home of the president and no trip is complete without taking in the White House.
In front of the palatial property on Pennsylvania Avenue, you’ll find the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial within the National Mall. This is an ideal place to get your bearings from beneath cherry trees and whilst perched on grassy embankments.
Whilst you’re in the downtown district, why not pop into one of the Smithsonian museums. There are 16 in total and collectively they make up the largest museum complex on the planet. The National History Museum is especially worth a visit.
Thanks to Washington DC’s location, it makes the perfect place to start an American road trip. The historic Civil War battlefields of Gettysburg are just a short drive north whereas the maritime history of Annapolis, on Chesapeake Bay, is around the same distance east.
