Local Area
Washington DC (District of Columbia) sits on the banks of the Potomac River bordered by Maryland and Virginia. It’s a great place to start a self-drive tour of colonial America and the Blue Ridge Mountains, with the battlefields of Gettysburg just a short drive north.
It’s a straightforward city to stroll around with numerous neoclassical monuments and government buildings – including the White House and Lincoln Memorial – all accessible on a quick tour of downtown. There are also several Smithsonian museums in the area which offer free entry as well as a world of natural history and American art.
Head away from the city centre and you’ll find districts, such as Georgetown, offering a peaceful slice of life on the banks of the river. This is where 18th century Federal architecture and cobbled stone streets can still be found. It’s somewhere to walk around the gardens at the Waterfront Park or hire a bike and pedal off alongside the C&O Canal.
