Birdwatching in the Doñana, Grazalema & the Straits of Gibraltar

Flamingos in Doñana National Park, Spain

Saga Hosted Hotels

Birdwatching

Andalucía is one of the best places in Europe for birdwatching. On this fantastic trip, you’ll be based in a beachfront hotel on the Costa de la Luz – gateway to several superb birdwatching locations. Binoculars to hand, we’ll head out with an expert ornithologist to some spectacular sites including the Grazalema Natural Park and the southern fringes of the world famous Doñana National Park. You’ll also keep your eyes skywards as you look for birds soaring on thermals and updrafts across the Straits of Gibraltar, a key migratory route between Europe and Africa.

Five included excursions
- La Breña & Barbate Marshes Natural Park (half day)
- La Janda and Alcornocales Natural Park (full day)
- Sanlúcar de Barrameda salt pans (full day)
- Grazalema Natural Park (full day)
- Straits of Gibraltar (full day)

You’re on a beautifully unspoilt stretch of coast here, just two kilometres from low-key Conil de la Frontera, a traditional Andalusian 'pueblo blanco' by the sea. The huge pool is the star of the show, bordered by palms and overlooking the white-tipped waves of the Atlantic. There’s a small heated indoor pool inside (ideal if the wind picks up), plus a bar and a buffet restaurant with a terrace surrounded by greenery. Rooms are simply furnished but comfortable.

Local Area

Conil is a picturesque former fishing village, with a lovely old town and plenty of tapas bars and seafood restaurants. The main beach is one of Spain’s most beautiful – a long sweep of golden sand with shallow waters that are surprisingly calm for the Costa de la Luz. A 20-minute drive leads you to picturesque Vejer de la Frontera, a hilltop pueblo blanco, while 40 minutes will bring you to the ancient city of Cadiz (there’s a weekly included shuttle bus). A little further afield, you’ve got Jerez de la Frontera, the heart of sherry country (around an hour away), and beautiful Seville, sitting on the Guadalquivir River (90 minutes).

Optional excursions

Optional excursions can only be booked in resort and are subject to minimum numbers

La Breña & Barbate Marshes Natural Park

1/5

The salt marshes, pine woods and freshwater lakes of this natural park are home to a huge array of birdlife, from the yellow-legged gulls, jackdaws, egrets and falcons that nest in the craggy cliffs, to the slender-billed and Audouin’s gulls and Caspian terns that flit across the marshes. The rare northern bald ibis has recently been reintroduced – your guide will be on hand to help locate them.
