Although this is one of our longest-duration self-drives, it’s also probably our most chilled with plenty of multi-night stopovers in all the key places, including in Scottsdale, Sedona, Santa Fe and Tucson. The rewarding state of New Mexico offers unrivalled insight into Native American culture, with adobe-style pueblos sitting next to the colonial mansions of the early Spanish missionaries and conquistadors. It’s full of quirky charm too, from atomic weapons, gypsum dunes, wild west shootouts, space museums and even UFO crash-landings.
