Local Area
The Cape Cod peninsula extends into the Atlantic from mainland Massachusetts in northeast America. It’s roughly a 2hr drive south of Boston and pretty much a similar distance east of Rhode Island. The location, and the soft sand beaches, have made it a regular fixture on road trips around New England.
Offshore islands, such as Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, can both be reached by ferry from the harbour village of Hyannis. This is where you’ll find the maritime museum and opportunities to go whale watching or fishing out at sea. Hyannis also has some lovely beaches with picnic areas, lifeguards, and snack shacks if you’re looking for a bite to eat.
Head further along the coast and you’ll discover numerous other beach parks and seaside towns. Although the highway does get busy in the summer, if you set out early enough, you’re bound to find a scenic spot from where to stroll on soft white sand.
On the northeast coast of Cape Cod the National Seashore has numerous pine forested trails and paved cycle paths. Historic lighthouses, artists’ dune shacks, and award-winning public beaches – such as Race Point and Coast Guard – can all be found if you’re looking to explore away from the crowds.
