Local Area
Located roughly four hours’ drive north of New York City, Boston is the state capital of Massachusetts and sits overlooking a huge bay on America’s northeast Atlantic Coast. It’s a historic harbour city, famed for the events that triggered independence from the British.
Basing yourself near the common is a good idea to get your bearings, and both the waterfront and Back Bay districts are easily reached from Saint James Avenue.
Boston is an easy city to navigate with Faneuil Hall, Fenway Park and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum all recommended on a sightseeing tour. There are also several trolley bus tours of the Old Town as well as an excellent visitor centre located on the common.
Elsewhere you’ll find free walking trails incorporating the city’s most important historic sites. The Freedom Trail starts from the common and takes in 16 significant sites associated with American independence. The Black Heritage Trail starts on Beacon Street and includes 14 sites detailing the history of the city’s African American community.
